The lab has facilities to carry out analysis of physical parameters of soil such as Bulk density, texture, and chemical properties such as Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Organic carbon. Lab is also equipped for micronutrient analysis using Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer.



The overall mission of the Genomics laboratory is the conduct research in functional genomics of tree species and elucidate molecular mechanisms during host-pathogen/pest interaction, wood development, adventitious rooting, hormonal signaling and other developmental traits using advanced tools.


The present infrastructure facility in the Genomics laboratory houses all basic equipments required to conduct research in Genomics including a culture facility, thermal cycler, incubator, water baths, deep freezers (-800C), centrifuges,  basic and high throughput electrophoretic units, hybridization array system and Phast and FPLC systems. In future the laboratory aims to up-grade the infrastructure with inclusion of facilities for transcriptomics using NGS platform.


The laboratory has a permanent Research Assistant Grade II and several research scholars and field assistant.  Training of the permanent staff to enable handling of equipments and basic experiments was imparted in-house. Efforts will be made in future to empower the staff to handle experiments on proteins.


Presently, the laboratory houses three DBT funded project and one ICFRE funded project with total budget outlay of  `105.55 lakhs. In future, projects aiming on transcriptomics will be submitted to national and international agencies for financial support.



Industrial partnership with paper and pulp industries and department collaboration with SFDs are in place to transfer research results to the stake holders.
Further,  under the program on “Commercialization of Technologies” we are collaborating with Biotech Consortium of India Ltd (BCIL), New Delhi to commercialize the RNA isolation technology.


Academic partners in our program include both national and international institutes including KAU, FRI and CSIRO, Australia. Further, under the DBT-CREST Award, a training is envisaged in Texas A&M laboratory.


The Genomics laboratory has the distinction in conducting research on advanced areas of forest biotechnology including diagnostic and selection markers, novel proteins, molecular host-pathogen interaction and wood development.  The research results are published in impact factor journals of national and international repute. Research findings were also presented in international conferences/ symposium at Malaysia, Argentina and South Korea.


Hands on training is imparted to students, researchers and junior scientists on basic areas of molecular biology under project / training mode.

These laboratories undertake characterization of tree genetic resources using biochemical and  DNA markers.  They complement the field testing and selection of outstanding poulations / individuals of a given species for improving productivity.  Evaluation of genetic diversity within and among natural populations and breeding populations, characterization of hybrids and clones and estimation of mating system are the important services provided by these laboratories.

Services / Tests carried out

In the Tissue Culture Laboratory, studies are pursued in organ and tissue culture of industrially and economically important forestry species including Eucalyptus, Acacia, Teak and bamboos with the major objective of cloning for large-scale multiplication. Attempts towards the morphogenesis in casuarina, which will be useful in the development of somaclonal variants as well as work on differentiation and expression of roots from the mature tissues of Dendrocalamus giganteus and Bambusa nutans for rapid multiplication are also carried out.

  1. Diagnosis and identification of pathogenic organisms isolated from the diseased seeds, seedlings, wood and other plant materials.
  2. Isolation, characterization and identification of biofertilizers of Ecto- and Endomycorrhizal fungi, quantification of AM fungal spore population of rhizosphere soil and estimation of the dominant fungal types and determination of colonization of both Ecto- and AM fungi based on anatomical studies of roots are carried out.
  3. Pure culture and mass production of potential mycorrhizal isolates and other beneficial microbes in laboratory.
  4. In vitrosynthesis of different Ecto- and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi on various host plants.
  5. Bioassay studies on the effect and efficacy of plant pathogens on targeted host plants are other tests conducted in the lab.

The Cell Culture laboratory was developed to conduct research in biochemistry, biotechnology, specifically focusing on metabolite analyses. Presently the major areas the laboratory works include:

  1. Metabolite profiling in medicinal plants.
  2. Biochemical studies associated with physiological changes.
  3. Marker studies for genetic diversity

The laboratory presently supports projects funded by ICFRE and National Medicinal Plants Board. The projects include:

  1. Bioproduction of secondary metabolites from Aegle marmelos (NMPB)
  2. Development of macro and micropropagation techniques for Melia dubia Cav. for planting stock production (ICFRE)
  3. Studies on response of important tree species to elevated CO2 levels at seedling stage (ICFRE)
  4. Developing cloning techniques forraising high yielding clonal plantations in Casuarina equisetifolia (ICFRE)
  5. Selection and conservation of red and sweet tamarind in southern India (ICFRE)

The laboratory is equipped with basic infrastructural facilities required for conducting research in the areas defined. The equipment maintained in the laboratory include Bioreactor, electrophoretic systems (vertical and horizontal), deep freezers (-200C), refrigerated centrifuge, UV visible spectrophotometer,  freeze drier, water bath, High Pressure Liquid Chromatography system, Hot air oven, Fume hood, Bioreactor, gel rocker, etc..

Walk-in store cool

The institute has a well-established seed bank in order to facilitate ex-situ conservation of forestry seeds. In the perspective of biodiversity conservation and to conduct storage trials on seeds the seed bank is equipped with three walk-in store cool chambers for large-scale storage facility.  A deep freezer and a refrigerator also serve as storage devices for maintaining very low temperature ranges upto -5 °C.

It is provided with equipments such as Gravity Separator, Ro-tap sieve shaker with test-sieves and Dacota type seed blower which help in seed cleaning and grading of various seed types. Sampling devices namely Boerner Sampler and Sample Divider aid in reducing the size of seed composite sample into submitted and working samples.

The seed bank also hosts a carpellarium that guides identification of different forest seeds originating from diverse forest types and helps in purity analysis.
