Genetics and Tree Breeding Division

  • Seedling seed orchards have been established for Eucalyptus, Casuarinas and Acacias at different locations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry as per breeding programmes initiated in 1995.
  • It is estimated that a gain of 10-15% would be obtained from the seed orchard.
  • Quality seeds (about 40 kilogram) are collected from the seed orchards every year and supplied to Forest Departments, Industries and Farmers.
  • 100 superior trees of Eucalyptus have been selected from SSO,established multilocation clonal trials in TN,AP and Kerala and being evaluated to identify the high yielding clones.
  • To enhance the productivity as well as combine the desirable traits of different species, interspecific hybrids of Eucalypts (Eucalyptus tereticornis with E. camaldulensis, E. grandis, E. pellita, E. urophylla and E. alba )are produced and being tested in different sites.
  • Controlled pollination has been carried out in high yielding clones of tamarind with red pulp clones to produce high yielding strains with red pulp.
